This census year, they're making sure they're tallied as a gay couple. They'll check off the "unmarried partner" box that was introduced in 1990 but is only now receiving a major push by some gay civil rights groups.

Gay civil rights groups are putting ads in gay-oriented newspapers and magazines and sending e-mail, urging gays and lesbians to check the "unmarried partner" category if they qualify. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force also is talking to other gay groups about possibly pushing for a sexual orientation question on the 2010 census.

Advocates say the government should collect information on gays because the census affects public policy and federal funding for research and community services. They say the data are important as lawmakers consider legislation on hate crimes and gay families with children.
