Abstract (Document Summary)

James B. Irwin, one of 12 men to walk on the moon, has become the first of those celebrated astronauts to die.

Mr. Irwin, who walked on the moon in 1971 and later became a minister who searched for traces of Noah's Ark, died Thursday (Aug. 8, 1991) in Glenwood Springs, Colo.

The High Flight Foundation's most publicized efforts involved six expeditions led by Mr. Irwin to Mount Ararat in Turkey in an unsuccessful search for remnants of Noah's Ark.
