The little girl couldn't know then that skating would propel her into international competition, and she would glide her way into being one of the last athletes to compete in the Soviet Union-style athletic system. During her teenage years, Gilauri developed into a top-level individual figure skater, but as she grew older, she moved into ice dancing with a partner.
