Superintendent Miles has lately given the wires of the fire alarm telegraph a thorough overhauling, and the department is now in as efficient a condition as could be desired. Before the automatic hour were placed in position the failures and defects in turning in alarms were frequent and often entailed serious loss of property, but since that time 363 alarms have been turned in without a single hitch or failure.
