How safe is America's blood supply? The American Red Cross, the principal collector of blood, will tell you it is safe as can be. There is, the ARC says, for example, a greater risk in a minor operation like an appendectomy (where the risk of death, says the ARC, is about one in 5,000) than in getting anything serious from a blood transfusion.
