The Office of the People's Counsel, an independent agency of the D.C. government, and the District chapter of AARP will present the East of the River Energy Expo next Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, 3000 Pennsylvania Ave SE. The event is free and open to the public, and is geared to residents of Southeast and Southwest.

Woodrow Wilson Senior High School senior Samuel Sandifer has won the Washington title in the AAA Travel High School Challenge, a travel and geography competition for students from the District. Sandifer will go to Orlando in May for the national final to compete for a $25,000 college scholarship.

The poetry slam features pre-qualified poets competing for the top prizes. Three finalists will receive the chance to record their poems in DPR's recording studio, attend D.C. Writers Corps writing workshops, perform throughout the city and receive poetry books and other prizes.
