[Len] and his wife [Maggie LeVee] do these together: Len in the elevator control room and riding on the top of the car while Maggie stands as inconspicuously as she can in the elevator car's corner all day tallying passengers on the clipboard in her hand, a stopwatch hanging from a string around her neck. She will stop at every floor and make sure the call buttons work and that the elevator gongs, keeping an eye on her stopwatch to catch the elevator's floor-to-floor time.

Part of the reason there are so many elevator consultants in Bowie is that community is home to one of the 20 national offices of Lerch Bates & Associates Inc., a leading international elevator firm.

The enclave of elevator experts is a surprise to many Bowie business leaders, such as John Henry King, economic development director for the bedroom community, who said he had never even heard of elevator consultants.
