The story about Sen. [Strom Thurmond], by staff writer Kevin Merida, attracted many more letters. These also alleged political bias -- The Post did not do such pieces about a long list of Democratic lawmakers who were also in serious decline because of age in previous times, they noted. A number of these readers said Sen. Thurmond should have retired years ago, but all were upset at what they viewed as "a mean, personal assault" on the senator and an excessive degree of detail about what "the ravages of time" have done to him: his legs "flopping around like a puppet's," his "blotchy skin," the "oval Band-Aid on his forehead," the constant movement of his hands, his "staring blankly ahead," while others alertly question witnesses in hearings.
