[David G. Volkert II], 87, a retired engineering firm chairman whose design credits include Arena Stage, the U.S. Navy Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery's Visitors Center as well as bridges, highways and airports across the country, died of pneumonia Jan. 8 at his home in Middleburg.

He bought the firm in 1954 when it was a small operation owned by Southern Industries, a Mobile-based conglomerate that also controlled hotel and restaurant interests. Mr. Volkert was president of Southern Industries and an executive of its parent company when he bought the engineering firm and set up its main office in Mobile.
