Asked to decide who was telling the truth, four prostitutes or a police officer, a D.C. Superior Court jury yesterday sided with the streetwalkers, convicting Detective John Mehalic III of 10 felonies, including kidnapping, sexual assault, extortion and stalking.
Judge Henry F. Greene convicted Mehalic of three misdemeanors and sent the suspended officer directly to jail to await his Feb. 1 sentencing. He said Mehalic's variously defiant and evasive testimony "did not do him any good at any point."
The women said Mehalic played by no known rules. One prostitute, who introduced herself to the jury as "a lady of the night" working to support herself and her son, said Mehalic locked his car doors and demanded oral sex in early 1997.
