Buffalo's Bryce Paup led the NFL with 17.5 sacks in 1995. He was the only player to average at least one per game. [Rich] Owens's four ties him for second in the NFC and fifth in the NFL through four weeks. Owens has an infectious smile. Defensive tackle Sean Gilbert, who can deliver good-natured impersonations of several players and coaches, has Owens's toothy smile down cold.

Those looking at Owens now will notice he's 40 pounds heavier than the end of last season. And as for credit, Owens deserves a bunch, but some of it is perhaps lost in the wake of Gilbert's performance so far this season. Double-teamed as a matter of course, Gilbert has become an anchor in the middle of the defensive line. He has helped improve the run defense, has three sacks and, because opponents concentrate on him, others have chances to make plays.
