One quarter of the pitch at the University of Virginia's Klockner Stadium was nearly under water, and a guy from Rutgers scored both goals, but make no mistake: This was still D.C. United Coach Bruce Arena's night.
Arena, U-Va.'s coach for 18 seasons, made a triumphant return in tonight's U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal as United defeated the Carolina Dynamo of the USISL Select League, 2-0, in front of 1,829.
Arena's team would not have impressed the Charlottesville faithful without Steve Rammel, one of the few United players who didn't plan on staying in town and visiting old haunts after the game. After a sloppy first half, Rammel scored in the 50th and 83rd minutes. Despite the presence of former Cavaliers, such as defender Jeff Agoos and midfielder John Harkes -- now members of the U.S. national team -- Rammel stole the spotlight.
