Ward 2 council member Jack Evans read a ceremonial proclamation that declared it Cairo Day in the District. "The Cairo is a real monument in the area," Evans said.

To show how important the Cairo is to the area, the Dupont Circle residents association donated a check for $1,000 to Ross Elementary School for an after-school program. In return, Ross students sang "Happy Birthday" to the Cairo.

"The Cairo is rededicated as a towering symbol in the community we live in," said Louis Patierno, a member of the Cairo Centennial Committee.
