In 1949, Gen. Gaither became commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was operations officer at the Pentagon at the outbreak of the Korean War and served as commander of the 11th Airborne Division before his assignment to Korea.

Gen. Gaither was deputy commander for reserve components and commander in chief of the Caribbean command before his assignment to Fort Meade.

Gen. Gaither was president of the Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland, commander of the Annapolis chapter of the Military Order of World Wars and a member of the Rotary Club of Annapolis, the Army & Navy Club in Washington and the Annapolis Yacht Club.
