James Cardinal Hickey's assertion {op-ed, July 13} that the Rev. George Stallings' breakaway Imani Temple "has more to do with the problems and expectations of one individual than broader 1903519091understatement if ever there was one. If the Rev. Stallings is alone in his frustration with the Catholic Church's treatment of African Americans, then why has he had such a tremendous following (4,000 worshipers at Imani Temple's first service; 2,000 at its second)? Clearly the Rev. Stallings is not alone in his belief that culturally sensitive change must come quicker than Cardinal Hickey and others in the overwhelmingly white church hierarchy are ready to admit.
