[Stockton] Police Chief Jack Calkins said conflicting records show that [Patrick Edward Purdy] was either 24 or 26 years old. Calkins said that in 1986 Purdy's mother filed a complaint against Purdy and his brother for breaking out her car window after she refused to give them money for drugs.

Stockton deputy police chief Lucian Neely said Purdy, also known as Patrick West, had an extensive criminal record, including arrests in Los Angeles for drug and firearms violations and soliciting prostitutes. Neely said Purdy recently had been charged with robbery near Woodland, Calif., west of Sacramento. Purdy's car had license plates from Oregon, where he also reportedly had a criminal record, Neely said.

Mara Pricola, whose daughter attends kindergarten at the school, visited wounded second-grade teacher Janet Geng at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Pricola said Geng told her she tried to stay down after being shot in the leg for fear that the gunman might shoot her again. "She remembers pieces of asphalt flying into the air as bullets struck the ground around her," Pricola said. Geng is listed in stable condition.
