New York Muslims closely coordinated with police their 24-hour-a-day patrols. But while the local Muslims met with D.C. police in recent weeks in an attempt to negotiate tactics, police officials and group members could not agree, and uncomfortable officials declined to sanction the Mayfair patrols, a police spokesman said.
Some of the approximately 20 members of the Fruit of Islam who began patroling Mayfair on Monday wore the squad's initials "FOI" on their sleeves or on caps. Nation of Islam officials said yesterday that the patrols at Mayfair were unarmed, even when they disarmed the shotgun-toting man.
"I guess people believe that they can depend on the Muslims because the Muslims send the message that they are not afraid of anything," said [Askia Muhammad]. "We were always taught that carrying a weapon is evidence you don't have faith in God."
