[Joe Harrington], who had a 112-85 record at Mason, was the school's first full-time basketball coach. He led the Patriots to their first postseason bid, an invitation to the 1986 National Invitation Tournament in which the Patriots defeated Lamar in the first round.
Harrington has been a Division I coach for eight years, with a 126-99 overall record. He coached one season at Hofstra after being an assistant under Lefty Driesell at Maryland for 10 years. He left Hofstra when the [George Mason] job opened.
[Ivan Powell] told the newspaper that Maryland's change in coaches made his transition difficult. Powell signed a letter of intent before Bob Wade replaced Lefty Driesell.
