Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley was in Denver last night, trying to lure the Broncos' Mike Shanahan to become the next head coach of the Gators. [Rex Grossman], the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, said if Shanahan were the coach, he would love to come back. But he needs to know by Friday, the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft. Should Shanahan take the Florida job, it would continue an already dizzying set of events among the NFL coaching ranks. San Diego's Mike Riley and Minnesota's Dennis Green were ousted last week, and yesterday the Carolina Panthers fired George Seifert after three seasons.
