The start of the trial, the largest in Austria since World War II, follows a five-month parliamentary inquiry into the shipment of about 110 artillery pieces and 41,000 shells to Iran. The weapons were sent via third countries, including Libya, in 1985 and 1986 during Iran's war with Iraq. Austrian neutrality law bars weapons sales to states involved in armed conflict.
