[Magruder] has hired Damascus assistant Todd Tunnel to replace Roy Lester as football coach, Magruder Athletic Director Rick Grimsley said.
Tunnel - who teaches at the Rockville school and assisted at Damascus for six years - was the choice from among seven candidates, including two who currently coach at other Montgomery County schools. Before coaching under Damascus's Al Thomas, whose teams have won the past two Maryland Class 2A state titles, Tunnel, 31, played at Damascus and then at the University of Rhode Island.
Tunnel, who yesterday could not be reached, brings from Damascus experience with Thomas's pro-set offense, a stark contrast to the running style of Lester, who coached at Magruder for 15 years during a 41-year career and compiled a 107-47 record there.
