In a study of more than 5,700 inbred offspring of Utah Mormons, Lynn B. Jorde of the University of Utah human genetics department found that mortality before age 16 among descendants of first cousins was 9 percent higher than among offspring of unrelated parents. Jorde noted first-cousin marriages among Mormons is nearly nonexistent today.
