Alexandria-based architect Robert Gurney made a porch usable year- round by designing pocket doors on its three exterior sides that close to shut out cold and rain while the porch remains open to the house. "It was a challenge to open it up enough to feel like a porch, but make the openings small enough so that they could be controlled," says Gurney.
