On "Cry Cry Cry," their first album as a trio, Dar Williams, Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky have removed the hyphen from the singer-songwriter label. In recording 11 songs from other artists, the Cry Cry Cry trio reminds us that the songwriter is not always the best singer for the song. Like that earlier mixed-gender folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, Cry Cry Cry illustrates the advantages of taking the best works of contemporary folk musicians and fleshing them out with lovely, three-part harmonies.
