The [AMIKAM] Stern Gang -- known in Hebrew as Lehi, an acronym for Israel Freedom Fighters -- was the most militant of the pre-state underground groups. Lehi carried out the 1944 assassination of Lord Moyne, the British minister for the Middle East, and was blamed for the 1948 assassination of the U.N. mediator in Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte. Former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Shamir commanded Lehi in the 1940s.
