The Groups Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program have good news: 140 babies treated for severe jaundice -- their bilirubin levels measured over 25 milligrams per deciliter -- showed no cognitive or neurological differences when compared with 400 non-jaundiced infants. In 130 of the infants, bilirubin levels measured from 25 to 29 milligrams while 10 infants had readings above 30. Levels above 30 have been linked to brain damage, cerebral palsy and even death.
