W-B Council OKs Amended 2013 Budget

Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
The $43.9 million budget, more than $872,000 less than last year's, includes a 25-mill property tax increase, raising the rate to 121.63 mills. Council also approved increases in sewer and restaurant license fees Friday that will accompany the increased recycling fees, garbage bag prices, parking ticket and meter fees that members approved earlier this month. "You are supposed to be representing us," said an angry Betsy Summers, who ran against [Tom Leighton] as a Libertarian in the 2011 mayoral election. "You don't have to accept this. You are killing this city. You've taxed all the working people out of here with the exorbitant income tax. Now you're going to tax the residents with this exorbitant property tax." Council had no choice but to raise taxes next year - if members didn't approve the budget Friday, Leighton's original proposed budget and its 31 percent tax increase would under the charter have gone into effect Tuesday.
