Abstract (Document Summary)

A glance at the ingredient list identifies "partially hydrogenated soybean oil" as the second ingredient and only source of fat. Since the serving size is listed as two per bag, each serving has 2 grams of trans fat. Those, like me, who eat a whole bag of microwave popcorn are getting 4 grams of artery-clogging trans fats.

More mainstream food processors and manufacturers are rushing to get reformulated trans fat-free products on the shelves every day. Pepperidge Farm has removed trans fats from its Goldfish line. House of Raeford has switched to trans fat-free Whole Harvest oil for fried chicken tenders and patties. Frito-Lay has switched from trans fats in Cheetos, Doritos and Tostitos. Nabisco is phasing them out of crackers. Tyson Foods Inc. announced earlier this year that it is eliminating trans fats from all cooked retail products.

For many, trans-fat consumption begins early in life. A serving of Nabisco Barnum's Animal Crackers has a gram of trans fat. Although Jell-O Instant Pudding Mix has no trans fat, the same flavored Jell-O Pudding Snacks that parents pack into children's lunchboxes have 1.5 grams trans fat.
