The next phase of the VDOT training program will teach roadside managers to identify mosquitoes' species, including those that could carry West Nile virus. Not all mosquitoes are potential carriers of the virus.
In rare instances, it can lead to more severe illnesses: West Nile encephalitis, West Nile meningitis or West Nile meningoencephalitis.
* People concerned about water standing for more than a week on VDOT rights-of-way can call the Highway Helpline at (800) 367-ROAD (7623) or e-mail a request online at http://virginiadot.org/ comtravel/eoc/citizen.asp. VDOT does not maintain roadway ditches in Henrico or Arlington counties.
