Abstract (Document Summary)

To close the Green Lane purchase, the city signed deals with First Nations bands with reserves close to the landfill that had threatened to take Toronto to court. The bands will share an annual payment of about $500,000, calculated as a percentage of the landfill's revenue of about $15 million a year.

The total of "community benefit" payments to the bands and township amount to less than what Vaughan and York Region received when Toronto was still dumping its garbage in the Keele Valley landfill $4.27 a tonne at Green Lane, compared with $6 a tonne at Keele Valley.
