Abstract (Document Summary)

Yonge and Dundas square is the best recent example of Toronto central's approach to an urban aesthetic. I know the dearth of green space in the square has been talked to death, but c'mon - Y&D didn't even make a token attempt to green it up; there's no affirmative planting at all.

It's as if it was designed by somebody who didn't just lack the ability to landscape anything remotely verdant, but by somebody who actively hates plant life. Wait - did one of the villains from Captain Planet & The Planeteers have a hand in Y&D square? Hoggish Greedly, perhaps?

I'm also intrigued by the creative combatants of Gayla Trail's "You Grow Girl" website at She and her contributors have fashioned an attractive and thorough step-by-step D.I.Y. webby zine-type site that covers everything from growing plants in a dorm room to why goats are ideal for weeding.
