"The Pope wishes Fulham fans the best," a special envoy to the Pope reportedly said. "He has written before hoping Fulham's fortunes would be reversed and offers his support, such as he can give it."

I think it's fair to say Pope [John Paul I] would have been pleased by his native country's inclusion in the 2002 World Cup, but did that mean he rooted for Poland players wherever they happened to be? Liverpool and Poland goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek claimed as much only months before the pontiff's death.

Ahead of a quarter-final match between upstart Republic of Ireland and the heavily favoured host nation, the Pope invited the Celtic squad to the Vatican for a personal audience. The Irish players were Catholics to a man. During their meeting the Pope posed for pictures, spent long minutes in discussion with Irish goalkeeper Packie Bonner and wished the team good luck in their match with the Azzurri.
