When Black September gunmen took Israeli athletes hostage at the Munich Olympics 30 years ago tomorrow, Israel exacted deadly retribution on the leaders of the shadowy Palestinian group.

This ethic of self-sufficiency was behind Israel's decision to dispatch commandos to Entebbe, Uganda, in 1976 to rescue Israeli and other Jewish hostages from a hijacked Air France flight, [Yigal Eyal] said.

Zvi Zamir, who as chief of the Mossad watched German police bungle the rescue attempt at Furstenfeldbruck air base outside Munich, recalled in a U.S. television interview that he discussed Israel's options for retribution with Meir.
