Abstract (Document Summary)

[Elvira Caria] favours the site in [Vaughan]'s proposed corporate centre on Highway 7 where a vibrant downtown area of high-density commercial, residential and institutional development is being planned. The city is also pushing for the extension of the TTC's Spadina subway to that location. York Region plans to build a rapid transit way along Highway 7 connecting to Toronto, Peel and Durham regions.

[Mario Ferri] is opting for a civic centre with facilities such as a public square and gardens, an arts and culture complex and resource library, rather than a stand-alone city hall to serve the needs of the burgeoning city. Vaughan's population is expected to increase to 350,000 by 2025.

According to Councillor Mario Racco, the location at Major Mackenzie and Weston Rd., is too far from Vaughan's centre. It's not easy to get to, it doesn't have the high visibility needed for a civic centre, and will never have the public transportation network planned for Highway 7.
