Abstract (Document Summary)

The 1,100 [Maxwell] fans who crammed The Phoenix Saturday night for the soulful singer's sold-out gig may not forgive him for the succint hour-long show, primarily comprising tracks from his forthcoming album, but they have to credit his honesty.

Whether the concerns were his or the label's are unclear, but given that the balladeer's experimental 1998 sophmore effort, Embrya, sold less than his 1996 debut and was considered a misstep by critics, Maxwell's bound to be feeling pressured about Now.

There was no sign of trouble at Saturday's show. Casually clad in brown silk shirt, gray pants and a colourful knit cap that kept his trademark afro under wraps, a fit and relaxed Maxwell worked the stage playfully.
