Abstract (Document Summary)

We meet Choon-Yi ("Spring Child"), the daughter of Chen Yoong, a poor farmer with dreams of a better life. Choon-Yi was born with only one arm, but is nonetheless an artist of genius. Her father wants her to succeed, and so he makes the dangerous trek across the ocean to Canada, so that he can find his fortune helping to build the railroad.

Choon-Yi's father tells her to "Paint me the train that runs on the rails I built."
