Abstract (Document Summary)

That's the contradiction and the mystery - a Toronto Star-TVA-La Presse poll by CROP this week gave PQ Premier Lucien Bouchard a lead of 28 percentage points over Jean Charest's Liberals among decided francophones.

If the PQ seems set to forfeit Beauce-South, it has its sights on keeping another riding in Chaudiere-Appalaches - Lotbiniere, about 75 kilometres to the northwest, where the party unseated a two-term Liberal in 1994 with a plurality of just 283 votes.

MIXED SIGNALS: [Raymond Bolduc], above, is a staunch federalist who has voted PQ before and may again. That's frustrating for Liberal organizers Marc Turcotte, left, and [Paul-Emile Doyon].
