Abstract (Document Summary)

The Antagonist: Lucien Bouchard And The Politics Of Delusion by Lawrence Martin (Penguin, 356 pages, $17.99). With the next Quebec election campaign all but officially underway, this edition of Martin's controversial take on the political chameleon that is Premier Lucien Bouchard has perfect timing. While veteran newsman and author Martin won broad applause for his less than flattering portrayal of Bouchard, Star reviewer Bob McKenzie was thoroughly unimpressed from his vantage point in Quebec city - particularly with the book's headline-grabbing revelations that a Toronto psychiatrist who had never met Bouchard concluded from afar that the politician suffers from something "esthetic character disorder." "It is the crudest hatchet job ever perpetrated on a political figure in this country," wrote McKenzie last year.
