Abstract (Document Summary)

Talk of a Toronto megacity has wakened the kind of activism that has been dormant in retired history teacher Elizabeth Davies for 20 years.

To gauge from the swelling ranks at public meetings each week, many others are discovering their activism as grassroots opposition to amalgamation grows. Paralegals to professors, sales people to retirees, even an ex-mayor - all have been stirred to action by what they see as an assault on democracy.

Residents are meeting in churches, in empty city council chambers, in subway stations and in union halls. They've printed anti-amalgamation newsletters, stormed a private megacity trustee meeting and have been phoning their local MPPs.
