Abstract (Document Summary)

The Leafs have agreed to a contract extension for the 34-year-old blueliner that will pay him a guaranteed $1 million (U.S.) each season for the next two years. The deal also includes a Toronto option on the 1998-99 campaign that, if exercised, could keep him in a Leaf uniform until he's almost 38.

[Jamie] Macoun - especially this year, with the emergence of Kenny Jonsson and the arrival of Larry Murphy - has seen his time on the power-play unit erode. He and Dave Ellett have become closers, the defencemen coach Pat Burns relies on in the final minutes to preserve a lead.

It is also Macoun and Ellett who Burns uses to shadow the opposition's top lines. When a Gretzky, Lemieux or Forsberg go over the boards, you can be assured of finding Macoun and Ellett on the ice.
