Abstract (Document Summary)

A Metro-York landfill of 280 hectares (692 acres) was in the works for a site in North Vaughan, a 122-hectare (301-acre) site for Peel had been selected in Caledon and a 120-hectare (296-acre) property for Durham in Pickering. All were on agricultural land.

``The community will be dancing in the streets. We are as excited as hell,'' said Mario Ferri, president of Vaughan CARES which has been fighting the North Vaughan landfill and any expansion of Metro Toronto's Keele Valley waste site at Maple.

Officials estimated the region spent close to $1.5 million opposing the North Vaughan dump, the City of Vaughan another $2 million and Vaughan CARES $600,000.
