Abstract (Document Summary)

Tommy, a mega-musical based on the The Who's 1969 song-cycle, claimed five Doras, including best musical production in the large theatre division (shows in theatres with more than 450 seats). Director Des McAnuff also won, as did Tyley Ross as male lead in a musical and The Who's Pete Townshend for composition.

Sharing top honors was Assassins, a hard-scrabble commercial revival of a Stephen Sondheim musical about U.S. president killers, which also claimed five awards, including best musical production in the mid-size category (150-450 seats). Two performers from the show, Richard McMillan and Paulina Gillis, also received Doras.
