Abstract (Document Summary)

It's just like old times. E.P. [Charles Taylor] tried, without success, to unload Northern Dancer; he won the Derby of 1964. Lyford Cay was first in the Plate after the buyer returned him to Taylor and got a refund. La Lorgnette, Windfields' last Plate champion, developed colic the day she was to be sold.

Windfields stock is almost always born at the Oshawa nursery, but War Deputy differs. Sweet Alliance, his dam, is too old and frail for the long trip north. So she stayed on at the Brookdale Farm in Kentucky, following a romantic interlude involving Silver Deputy. One result, of course, is that War Deputy isn't a Canadian native and is therefore ineligible for next summer's Plate.
