Abstract (Document Summary)

Meet John Ruaridh Mackenzie of Kintail, Earl of Cromartie and Chief of the Clan Mackenzie, a/k/a Cabarfeidh. From Strathpeffer, Ross & Cromartie, Scotland.

That would be when they were banished from Scotland after the failure of the 1745 uprising. (Things could have been worse: George Mackenzie, the 3rd Earl of Cromartie, had originally been sentenced to death by the House of Lords for supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rebellion. His son John helped recover the family fortune by raising a regiment for Hanoverian King George III from his Mackenzie clansmen.)

For their donations, Mac-types can get a personalized certificate from Cabarfeidh, the right to stay at the refurbished castle when they're in the neighborhood, and the use of the planned genealogical research centre. The earl has already signed a 99-year lease with the Clan Mackenzie Charitable Trust, which will operate the castle when it is rebuilt and open to the public.
