Abstract (Document Summary)

The Buffalo Sabres have reacted angrily to the NHL's decision not to suspend Calgary defenceman Jamie Macoun for slashing and breaking the jaw of star centre Pat LaFontaine.

Macoun was trying to prevent LaFontaine from breaking in on net. The Flames defenceman slashed at the Sabre forward, who was just completing the motion of shooting on net. As a result, his head was about waist high when Macoun's stick caught him flush on the jaw.

Macoun was penalized with a major and game misconduct, although Flames GM-coach Doug Risebrough complained that referee Bill McCreary never made the call until he saw the blood and how badly LaFontaine was hurt.
