Abstract (Document Summary)

[Daniel George Maston], 33, was an employee of the Point Lepreau nuclear power station last February when he was arrested after eight men consumed lime-flavored drink from a cafeteria dispenser into which Maston slipped a cupful of heavy water.

Point [Lepreau] allows workers a maximum of 30 millisieverts of radiation every three months and 50 millisieverts each year. The eight men received between nine and 137 millisieverts of tritium the day they drank juice tainted with heavy water - a mixture of water and radioactive tritium used to cool Candu reactors like Lepreau's a 630-megawatt unit.
