[Philip Marchand], who lived in B.C. at the time his book was published, has won the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize.

Carmanah, compiled by the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, celebrating the threatened Carmanah Valley forest, won the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize. Carmanah also receives the Bill Duthie Booksellers Choice citation and prize. The Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize went to Vancouver writer Keith Maillard for his novel Motet (Random House).

Children's author Paul Yee won the Sheila Egoff Children's Prize for his collection Tales From Gold Mountain (Douglas & McIntyre). The Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize was awarded to a limited edition work from Gorse Press in Prince George, B.C., Suitcase, by Victoria Walker.
