[Gerry Snyder] dogged NFL meetings for years before he was joined five years ago by Montreal financiers Ron Wilson and Jacques Francoeur, a force in Quebec publishing for more than 40 years. Francoeur sold Unimedia, which included major French-language dailies in Quebec city, Hull and Chicoutimi, to Conrad Black in June, 1987, for a reported $91 million. He is said to be the bankroll behind the Montreal bid.

"Third, nobody can make the argument that the NFL moving into Montreal would harm the CFL because that league no longer is here. Any attempt to say that this would adversely affect Canadian culture is patently ridiculous. Montreal getting an NFL team would not hurt anybody in Canada.

When Snyder and former Alouettes quarterback and coach Sam Etcheverry attended the 1988 NFL annual meeting in Phoenix, NFL owners played up the CFL and covered stadium issues.
