Abstract (Document Summary)

After she had finished writing her stunning picture-essay book, Wolves, (Douglas & McIntyre Ltd.) this summer, the 39-year-old [Candace Savage] flew north by floatplane an hour from Yellowknife to the vast moonscape of Canada's treeline, to keep round-the-clock binocular watch with three biologists on a pack of 13 wolves.

On this rare "wolf watch," Savage spied on a distant pack of seven magnificent white adults and six pups in a den that was right on the caribou route - but not for another month.

Slowly, the cubs vanished, and at the end of their wolf watch, Savage and the biologists walked over to investigate. The cubs had died, and been partially eaten by the adults. An autopsy on one of the carcasses showed it had starved to death.
