Soviet cagers rout Yugoslavs for gold

Julius Kariuki of Kenya won the 3,000-metre steeplechase gold medal in an Olympic-record eight minutes, 5.51 seconds today. Another Kenyan, Peter Koech, was second in 8:06.79 and Mark Rowland of Britain was third in 8:07.96 . . . Louise Ritter of Dallas won the gold medal for the United States in the women's high jump by leaping 6 feet, 8 inches, upsetting world record-holder Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria. Kostadinova took the silver with a jump of 6-7 1/4, and Tamara Bykova of the Soviet Union won the bronze with a jump of 6-6 1/4 . . . Bulgaria's Yordanka Donkova, the world record- holder in the women's 100-metre high hurdles, smashed her Olympic record in winning the gold in 12.38. Donkova, who set the Games' mark of 12.47 in the second-round heats, sailed effortlessly over the hurdles. Gloria Siebert of East Germany finished second in 12.61 and Claudia Zackiewicz of West Germany was third in 12.75 . . . Olga Bondarenko of the Soviet Union won the women's 10,000-metre run in an Olympic-record time of 31 minutes, 5.21 seconds, as the event made its premiere at the Summer Games. Elizabeth McColgan of Britain was second in 31:08.44, and Elena Joupieva of the Soviet Union was third in 31:19.82. World record-holder Ingrid Kristiansen, suffering from an ankle injury sustained in a preliminary, dropped out of the race with 18 laps left . . . Burlington's Dave Steen pulled off a stunning upset when he edged two-time Olympic decathlon gold medalist Daley Thompson of Great Britain for the bronze. Eighth over- all going into the final event, the 1,500 metres, Steen turned in the fourth-fastest time, while Thompson, suffering from a pulled hamstring, struggled home in 13th. The result gave the 28-year-old Steen 8,328 points - 22 more than Thompson.
